Sara Louise Boney Carroll, age 78, of Mt Gilead, NC, surrounded by her loving family, passed away on January 11, 2021 at UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center.
Sara was born in Savannah, Georgia to John Clifton Boney, Sr. and Annie Louise Robinson Boney. She was raised in Hamlet, NC where she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. Upon graduation from Hamlet High School in 1961, she attended both Greenbriar College as well as St. Andrews College. She received a degree in elementary education from St. Andrews College in 1965. After graduation, she began teaching 2nd grade in Woodbridge, Virginia. In 1967, she wed a dashing US Marine who captured her heart and took her to 6 different states over the years.
Sara was a stay-at-home mom to her two boys and a devoted military spouse. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, walking (especially on the beach), golfing, and traveling. She spent her life selflessly caring for those around her and thrived in making everyone feel comfortable and nurtured, especially in her home. She loved spoiling her 5 grandchildren and was often seen attending their various academic and sporting events. Anyone who knew her would agree with her husband’s 1990 retirement speech when he quoted Lionel Richie, “She was once, twice, three times a lady”.
Sara is survived by her husband of 53 years, Col John “Jack” Joseph Carroll, Sr USMC (Ret). of the home; her son, Col John “JJ” Joseph Carroll, Jr., USMC (Ret) wife Brande, grandsons Trip, Paddy and Collin of Stafford, Va; her son LtCol William Patrick Carroll, USMC (Ret) wife Cathy, granddaughters Maura and Casey of Swansboro, NC. Her brother, John Clifton Boney, Jr. wife Lynn Murrill Boney of Hamlet, NC as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and dear friends.
A fitting and appropriate “Going Home” ceremony will be conducted in the Spring in Hamlet, NC. Final arrangements will be coordinated at a later date. In the interim, she will remain as she has said at “My House” at the lake. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church, 200 Rice St. Hamlet, NC 28345.
