Rowena Haywood Sikes

Rowena Haywood Sikes, age 92, of Mount Gilead, NC passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020. She was the first born of her late parents Henry (Goose) Haywood and Jennie Dunn Haywood on September 19, 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband James M. Sikes, her brother Jimmy Haywood and sister Henrietta H. Tomberlin of Mount Gilead, NC. She is survived by several loving family members and close friends. There will be a graveside service at the Tedder Family Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, NC on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Glen Hancock officiating.

Rowena graduated with honors from Mt Gilead High School in 1941. She continued her post-secondary education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC graduating in 1949 and also earned a certificate in the science of Operating Room Techniques from the Medical Center in Jersey City, NJ in 1950. She was a registered nurse and worked in the Emergency Room at the Troy Hospital when it first opened in 1950 (now First Health Montgomery Memorial), later to retire with thirty years from the Anson County School System as a school nurse. Rowena devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to others. Her interests included family, gardening, and cooking. She loved dearly her pet Doberman Pinschers and the multitude of wildlife that surrounded her home.

She will be deeply missed but never forgotten by her family and friends. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by the staff at Sandy Ridge Homes in Candor, NC.
