Survivors include Gene’s daughter, Selena Parrish (Ronny) of Norwood; brother, Van Garris (Joyce) of Morven; sister, Vivian Pinion of Norwood; and sister-in-law, Violet Garris of Wadesboro.
After high school, Gene joined the Navy which allowed him to travel to many locations in the US and abroad. He was honorably discharged after 4 years of service and 2 years in the reserves. He served on carriers and submarines where his duties included drafting the schematics for the ships electrical systems. He studied electronics and drafting at Wingate College. His love for electronics led to a 35 year long career, traveling the US, as an electronics technician for Ecolab, with whom he retired.
Gene loved being outdoors and spending time with his loving dog, Rocky. He was happiest when he was hunting or fishing. He was a lifetime member of Anson Hunt Club and enjoyed the cookouts and friendships made there. Many will remember him for his towering 6’8” frame and his 1972 green Chevy Blazer that could be heard a mile away. Gene was a big farmer and always took pride in his garden.
Gene was devoted to his family and loved talking to people. He had many friends and acquaintances that will miss him dearly.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
