Helen “Polly” Thorpe, of Norwood, died Sunday evening, November 14 , 2021 at her home.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Thorpe’s life will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 2:00PM, in the chapel of Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood. Rev. Todd McSwain will officiate. Interment will follow in Norwood Cemetery. Mrs. Thorpe will lie in state on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Edwards Funeral Home from 1:00PM to 4:00PM and then one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
She was the daughter of the late James L. and Mildred Surratt Brock. She was a 1958 graduate of Norwood High School and stayed active with her high school classmates in the “Lunch Bunch” for many years, and looked forward to their quarterly luncheons and class reunions.
She worked for the US Government at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA, US Treasury in Charlotte, and Farmers Home Administratition, USDA in Albemarle. She retired from the US Government in 1994 after completing 37 years of service. In retirement she worked for Stanly County Senior Services by managing The Norwood Nutrition Site for 10 years. She loved others and enjoyed helping them. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Norwood and was a member of the Norwood Order of the Eastern Star for about 25 years, serving in many different offices. She served as Star Point, Secretary, and Associate Worthy Matron.
Polly was a kind, generous, and loyal woman to everyone, and greatly loved by family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ray Thorpe and brothers, James(Bo) Brock and Loyd (Doody) Brock.
Polly leaves to cherish her memory, son, Mark Poplin(Kelly); grandson, Chad Poplin(Nishawn Wilkinson); great granddaughter, Halina Poplin; stepson, Toby Thorpe(Kathy); stepdaughter, Amy Edwards(Tommy); sister in laws, Reba Brock and Lesa Brock; and a host of aunts, nephews, cousins, step-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
