Phillip (Phil) Monroe Thompson, age 85, of Pee Dee, NC passed away peacefully on February 18th, surrounded by his loving family.
The family will receive friends at Edwards Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead from 4 PM to 6 PM on Monday, February 20th, 2023. Funeral Services will take place at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Mt. Gilead on Tuesday, February 21st at 11 AM.
He was born in Montgomery County, NC on July 29, 1937 the oldest son of ten children born to Lacy and Ruth Thompson.
Phil was a devoted, Christian, husband, and father. He was married to the late Betty Lou Thompson for 33 years before her passing. Together they raised Betty’s two sons Michael and Leonard Britt along with their daughter, Donna Ruth (Thompson) Cranford, in their beloved country home in Pee Dee. He was a devoted husband, loving father and caring brother to his nine siblings.
No one can deny that Phil was a hard worker. As a young man, he helped his father on the family farm and worked in a sawmill cutting logs. He later worked in the manufacture of furniture at the Norwood furniture plant, as a fixer at Pee Dee Hosiery, in the shipping department at Gilead Manufacturing, and then went on to retire from Fruit of the Loom in Star, NC.
As a father and grandfather, he always spent time with his family, whether it was taking them fishing with his wife Betty, playing cards, pitching baseball or attending their kid’s many activities. He believed in putting God and his family first and gave freely of himself and his time. Phil was never one to miss a family event or gathering, especially around a delicious meal. He was a faithful member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, having served as a deacon for many years.
Two of Phil’s passions were the Atlanta Braves and hunting. He loved following the Braves on radio, television and in person, which included attending the 1991 National League Championship and appearance in that year’s World Series. He also spent many, many days quail and rabbit hunting. Seeing hunting dogs work a field was one of his great passions and many who hunted with him would attest to his love of hunting in the woodlands and fields of Montgomery County.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents Lacy and Ruth Thompson, his beloved wife Betty Lou Thompson, stepson Leonard Britt, brother Brad Thompson and sister Argene (Bill) McKeithan.
Phil is survived by his stepson Michael (Debbie) Britt, daughter Donna (Lloyd) Cranford; daughter-in-law Lisa Britt; grandchildren, Christopher Cranford, Lauren Britt and Landis Britt; step-grandchildren David Hall, Sarah Saheim and Phillip Cranford; eight great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren and seven siblings; Lorena (Dempsey) Surratt, Sam Thompson, Marie (Jim) Bowles Rebecca (Scott) Dunn, Alice (Phillip) Richardson, Jason (Reba) Thompson, and Brenda (Larry) Marley; and long-time companion Brenda McIntyre.
