Pamela Story

Pamela Grace Story, 68, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on February 15, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

Pamela Grace was born on September 19, 1954 in Montgomery County to the late Joseph Carson Story, Sr. and Phyllis Smith Story. She was a 1972 graduate of West Montgomery High School and attended Kings College in Charlotte, NC. While in college, she met her long-time friend, Diane McClain. She relocated to Chapel Hill with Diane where she worked as an administrative assistant at UNC Chapel Hill and became a huge Tar Heels fan. She helped Diane with her two small children, Shannon and Shawn.  As a baby, Shannon was unable to pronounce "Pam," and favored her middle name. From that point, Pam became known as Grace. 

Grace returned to Charlotte and worked in the banking industry prior to her move to Virginia, where she met her partner, Frieda Clayton. While in Virginia, she worked for the State Child Support Enforcement where she advocated for justice and wrangled the dead-beats. In 1995, Grace and Frieda moved to Florida where she devoted much of her time to her passions: painting and glass engraving. Annually, she would return to Charlotte to help Diane with the Glass Menagerie booth at the Southern Christmas Show. Grace also spent a lot of time traveling to Mount Gilead to care for her aging parents, and her dedication to their care was unmatched.

Grace loved being in Florida because she loved the beach. One of her favorite pastimes was searching for and collecting shells and shark teeth. Another favorite pastime was spending time with her three nieces, Lindsay, Melissa, and Sydney. She loved them like they were her own. She also had a soft spot in her heart for all animals, especially cats.

In addition to her parents, Grace is preceded in death by her sisters, Peggy Elizabeth (Betsy) Story and Patricia Story. Grace is survived by her partner of 41 years, Frieda Clayton. She is also survived by her brother Joseph Carson Story, Jr. (Doris Story) from Durham, NC and four sisters: Phyllis Strider (Robert Strider) of Mount Gilead; Paula Rankin (Steve Tyndall) of Punta Gorda, Florida; Tina Livingston (Phillip Davidoff) of Delray Beach, Florida; and Tami Styer (Dave Styer) of Huntersville, NC. She is also survived by seven nephews, three nieces and seven great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Sharon Cemetery on NC Highway 731 in Mount Gilead on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 2pm. A reception will follow at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall at 133 S. Main St. in Mount Gilead.
