Mitch McMurray Obituary

Paul Mitchell McMurray, a beloved husband, father, grandaddy, and friend, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at his cherished lake house on Lake Tillery.

Mitch was born on December 16, 1960, in Greenville, SC, to the late Paul and JoAnn Nash McMurray. Growing up, he was a proud Eagle Scout and played the bass in his high school orchestra. He was awarded the title of Most Witty in his senior class superlatives for his quick humor and playful spirit.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of South Carolina. He dedicated his professional life to the financial industry, most recently serving as a Compliance Senior Director at Wells Fargo. With over two decades of expertise in compliance and operational risk management, Mitch was a six sigma-trained black belt who made significant contributions throughout his 40-year career, including roles in supply chain management and new product development with Fortune 500 companies.

A devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Norwood, NC, Mitch also found joy in attending “lake church” summer services at Randall by the River, where he valued the community and fellowship.

Mitch loved every moment spent at Lake Tillery, where he created countless memories with his family and friends. Whether boating, jet skiing, kayaking, or hunting for various lake treasures like bobbers and golf balls, he embraced seemingly ordinary activities with enthusiasm and joy. An avid reader and book collector, Mitch was rarely seen without multiple books in progress, reflecting his thirst for knowledge and storytelling. Above all, Mitch’s true passion lay in serving others, always eager to lend a helping hand and make a difference in the lives of those around him.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 42 years, Kimberley Allen McMurray; children Megan (Jon) Hays and Blake McMurray; his treasured grandson, Charlie Hays; and his adored English lab, Luke. He is also survived by his sisters Sharon (Jeff) Jarman, Paula Simpson, and Sara (Steve) Osborne. In addition, he was loved by his five nephews and three nieces.

A memorial service celebrating Mitch’s remarkable life will be held on Friday, October 18th, at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Norwood, NC, with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church of Norwood, Randall by the River Church (formerly known as Randall UMC), or to your local public library.

Arrangements are entrusted to Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood, NC. Mitch’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
