Melvin Harper Obituary

Melvin T. Harper 89 of Norwood passed away Friday Evening, November 19, 2021 at Woodhaven Court in Albemarle.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. Rev. Mary Hatley and Rev. Todd McSwain will officiate and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Monday Evening, November 22, 2021, at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.

Melvin was born August 3, 1932 in Stanly County to the late Roy Oscar and Dessie Mae Solomon Harper. He enjoyed a long career beginning in 1953 with Albemarle Bakery(Mary Jane Bread): Jones Brothers Bakery (Town Talk & Holsum Bread): Dainty Maid Sandwich Company: Swinson Products; Jack’s Cookie Company; Moore’s Chips and Big Lots retiring in 1996. He was a longtime member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church and the Aquadale Lions Club.

Melvin will be lovingly remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He was a faithful Christian, advisor and mentor. He always enjoyed laughing and joking with those around him.  He loved gatherings with all his family at his house and watching the children playing in the yard. The family has some very special memories of Christmas celebrations at his house over the years.

He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years Hallie Mae McSwain Harper who he married December 1, 1951. Two sons, Ricky L. Harper (Cathy) and Tony D. Harper (Linda). Four granddaughters, Leanne Carson (Rob); Julie Harper Smith; Cindi Bowman (Gary) and Erica Harper-Redfoot (Jason). Seven great-grandchildren, Ben and Ryan Smith, Jac, Chase and Emma Carson; Lance and Josh Bowman. Also surviving are brother-in-law and sister-in-law Kenneth and Shelby McSwain and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Bobby Harper and two sisters, Gearaldine Harper Morris Knotts and Louvene Harper Tucker.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for the very special and loving care given to Melvin by the staff at Woodhaven Court and Hospice of Stanly & The Uwharrie. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or Hospice of Stanly & The Uwharrie.
