Mary Ellen Haywood

Mary Ellen Greene Haywood, 93, of Mt. Gilead, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2023 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 7, 2023 at Mt. Gilead First United Methodist Church. Rev. Lee Edwards  will officiate and burial will follow at Sharon Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the church fellowship hall from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. 

Mrs. Haywood was born on January 20, 1930 in Montgomery County to the late Charles Spurgeon and Minnie Brookshire Greene. She was a graduate of Mount Gilead High School and attended WCUNC. Throughout her life, she held many secretarial and bookkeeping positions and retired as a teller from Mount Gilead Savings and Loan. 

 She was a faithful member of Mt. Gilead First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a long time member of Chi Sigma Club, serving three terms as President and was a fifty year member of the local DAR chapter, which she served as Regent for three terms. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Gilbert Haywood Sr.; brothers and sister: Charles Greene, Keith Green, Hunter Greene, Gordon Greene, and Lydia Bowden. 

She is survived by her two children: Wayne Gilbert Haywood Jr. ‘Gil’ and wife Laura; and Lloyd Greene Haywood, and wife Rachel; two grandchildren: Brandon Haywood and wife Tara; and Charles Wayne Haywood ‘Charlie,’ and many nieces and nephews.
