Larry Stephen Simpson, a resident of Mt. Gilead, NC, passed away at home on June 5, 2023, at the age of 75. Born in Mt. Vernon, OH on April 5, 1948, to the late James W. Simpson and Dorothy (Ash) Simpson, Steve is survived by his beloved daughter, Stephanie Simpson of Lakewood, OH, and his caring sisters, Sandra (Fornie) Buckner of Crestline, OH, and Linda Snead of Mt. Gilead, NC. He also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews: Laura (Jeff) Nold of Shelby, OH, David Buckner of Crestline, OH, Sandi (Duane) Stutler of Norwood, NC, and Todd (Jennifer) Buckner of Falkville, AL, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews who meant the world to him.
Steve lived in Ohio most of his life and worked for many years as a machine repairman/machinist at General Motors. As a proud member of the United Auto Workers, he advocated for proper health and safety conditions. Above all, Steve treasured the time he spent with his daughter. He had many hobbies, but hunting with his nephews, camping with his sister's family, and golfing were favorites. He also enjoyed tailgating at Cleveland Browns games with his friend, Dale.
After retiring, Steve moved south and became the #1 fan of the warmer winters and Carolina blue skies. He loved spending time with his sister Linda "Granny" and niece Sandi and her family, who helped take such good care of him. Steve always had a soft spot for animals and would often take Granny's dog, Gizmo, for long rides on the golf cart. He also made sure the birds, squirrels, and deer in the area were well-fed. Fixing things and tinkering with his antique cars remained a source of joy for him. Steve's absence will be deeply felt by everyone who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends in the Twin Harbor community at the Twin Harbor Worship Center on Saturday, June 24th at 2 PM.
The family welcomes contributions to the Stanly County Humane Society as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.
