On Sunday, March 12, Garrie Williams Phillips, loving mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 103. Garrie was born on July 10, 1919 in Stanly County, North Carolina. She attended Endy High School, Albemarle, NC. On September 22, 1941, Garrie married Thomas Edgar Crayton, who was deceased in 1952. She and Tom were stationed in Hawaii when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Her second marriage was to Douglas Jennings Phillips, deceased.
Most of her career was spent working at the Navy Exchange in Pensacola, Florida where she has resided since 1957. Garrie was an avid gardener and a great bowler. She was a member the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association for 41 years, where she served as Chaplain. She served on the board and is an honorary board member.
Garrie is the youngest of thirteen children born to Leander and Florence (Honeycutt) Williams.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Henly) Shelton and her son, Dale (Sharon) Phillips. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Sterling (Amy) Shelton, Lawson Shelton, and Morgan Chamberlynn (Andrew) Campuzano. She has four great grandchildren, Charleston, SJ, Baylor and Hamilton. In her later years Garrie spent much time in her beloved North Carolina with many of her nieces and nephews, too many to list. But special to her were Francis Whitley, Anabel Speight, Lou Eubanks and Richard Eubanks.
Services will be held at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood, NC on Saturday, March 18. Visitation will be a 1:00 pm with the service at 2:00 with interment following at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
