Don Whitley

Donald Edward “Don” Whitley 85 of Oakboro died Thursday Evening, December 24, 2020 surrounded by his family at his home.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, December 28, 2020 at Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Ed Lowder will officiate. Mr. Whitley will lie in state Sunday Afternoon from 2:00 until 5:00 where friends are welcome to pay their respects. The family will not be present.

Don was born July 8, 1935 in Stanly County to the late Samp and Lela Barbee Whitley. He was a 1954 graduate of Oakboro High School and was a veteran of the United States Army. He loved his community and volunteered with the Oakboro Fire Department for many years. He was a member of Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon, enjoyed singing in the choir and being a member of the brotherhood. He was a retiree of Stanly Knitting Mills in Oakboro.

Don loved his family and many friends, especially his grandchildren. He found great joy in supporting his grandchildren in all their activities and watching them become adults.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Barbara Smith Whitley of the home. One son, Chris Whitley (Veronica), one daughter, Amy Whitley, two grandchildren, Baron Whitley and Hannah Triplett (Aaron). One sister, Dot Alsobrooks (Chip) all of Oakboro. A niece Wendi Miller (Brent) and great-nephew Isaiah.

He was preceded in death by his sister Judy Whitley Boles.
