Bill Turner

Willie Crowell “Bill” Turner, 84, of Oakboro died peacefully Saturday evening, November 27, 2021 at his home.                                        .

Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Big Lick Baptist Church.  Rev. Jeff Springer will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Those who attend are respectfully requested to wear mask and socially distance.

Bill was born April 21, 1937 in Stanly County to the late J. V. and Edna Whitley Turner.  Bill was a 1955 graduate of Oakboro High School

Bill began work in 1955 at the Stanly News and Press and retired as production manager after 50 years of service. Bill enjoyed his work and the relationships he had with his fellow employees.   He once said that some of his happiest years at the paper were spent as a linotype operator.  

Following his retirement Bill enjoyed working in his garden, his workshop, traveling to the beach and spending time with is family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

He was an active member of Big Lick Baptist Church serving in many areas of the church, including, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He volunteered many hours with the WSHS Colt Club and the Oakboro Rural Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Turner Tarlton and sister, Lou Eva Howard (Bud).

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Sylvia Huneycutt Turner of the home; sons, Cris Turner(Debbie) of Stanfield and Rick Turner(Denise) of Hartsville, SC. Five grandchildren, Davie Turner of Stanfield, Lea Turner(Chad) of Concord, Andrew Turner(Jenna), Landon Turner all of Charleston, SC and Madison Tarlton of Albemarle. Three great-grandchildren, Nate Turner, Addie Turner and Chloe Hancock.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff of Hospice of Stanly and the Uwharrie and Teresa Hatley , Ella Thomas and Shirley Efird for all their support and loving care.
