Betty Matheson

Betty Saunders Matheson 87 of Mt. Gilead died Friday Morning, July 2, 2021.

 Private Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, July 5, 2021 at Sharon Cemetery. Rev. Kong Namkung will officiate.

Mrs. Matheson was born March 31, 1934 in Richmond county to the late James Albert and Ann Leigh Player Saunders. She recieved her BS in education from Pfeiffer University, a Masters Degree in Reading from UNC Greensboro, a Masters in School Administration from UNCC and a 6 year degree from A& T University. She began her career at Mount Gilead Elementary and later Highland School and finishing her career at West Montgomery Middle School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of Chi Sigma.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Turner Matheson Sr., her son, Harold Turner “Hal” Matheson Jr., and her brother, Bill Saunders.

She is survived by her son, William A. “Bill” Matheson (Kacey) of Rockingham and her daughter, Elizabeth Matheson-Dameron (Paul) of Tishomingo, OK.. Two sisters, Lynne Cloaninger (Lane) of Apex, NC and Bobbie Monroe of Simpsonville, SC. Five granddaughters, Sarah Smith (Spenser), Shelby, Jessie (Artemio), Lilly and Allie Matheson.
