Al Calder

Leroy ‘Al’ Alfred Calder Jr., 81, of Norwood, passed away Friday, July 10, 2026 at his home.

A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Norwood First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Heather McIntyre will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood. 

Al was born on June 20, 1945 in Hemingway SC to the late LeRoy Alfred Sr., and Jessie Rhinehart Calder. He played college baseball and football for East Carolina University, and college baseball at Pembroke University. After college, he joined the United States Marine Corp and then went on to obtain his Masters Degree from NC State University. Mr. Calder taught Science at South Stanly High School for over 32 years where he led as a coach, mentor and trainer for both football and baseball. He was a member at Norwood First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was an avid golfer and loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lynn Burnett; and son-in-law, Wesley Smith. 

He is survived by his wife, Frankie Jo Story Calder of the home; children: Leigh Ann Smith of Norwood; and Leroy A Calder III ‘Alan’ (Heather) of Jamestown; five grandchildren: Anslee Smith, Wes Smith, Ty Smith, Hailey Thompson (Walker), and Alexis Calder; sister Dixie Ferris(Richard); and brother-in-law, Orris Burnett.
