Col. Burt Evans Slater, retired, 87 of Norwood died Tuesday Afternoon, February 19, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 24, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Norwood. Rev. Bill Roberts will officiate and interment will follow in Stanly Gardens of Memory with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 Saturday Afternoon at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.
Burt was born October 29, 1931 in Preston, New York to the late Frank and Ola Burt Slater. He was a 27 year veteran of the United States Army, serving 3 tours in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Colonel. Following his retirement from the Military, Burt and Barbara owned and operated Norwood Campground for 38 years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Norwood, serving on the Church Council and the Finance Committee. He was an active member of VFW Post 6183 in Norwood serving as Quarter Master for many years and was active in the Norwood Business Association for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Meredith Slater on May 29, 2016 and two sisters, Dorothy Stoddard and Betty Gates.
He is survived by three sons, Barry Slater (Connie) of Locust, Scott Slater (Tina) of Winston-Salem, and Chris Slater (Angie) of Concord. One daughter, Tina L. Almond (Darin) of Norwood.
Eight grandchildren, Michael Springer, Tanya Luther, Matt Slater, Beth McCandless, Jessica Slater, Kelly Slater, Jennie Slater and Ian Slater. Six great-grandchildren, Parker, Mia, Madison, Teagan, Waylon and Audrey.
