Wayne Smith Obituary

Wayne Douglas Smith

Wayne Douglas Smith, 80, of Mount Gilead, known as “Daddy”, “PawPaw”, “Papa Wayne”, and the “Mayor of Fairway Shores”.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Bear Creek Baptist Church, 480 Bonlee Carbonton Rd. Bear Creek, NC.  Rev. Duane Partin will officiate followed by Masonic Rites. A visitaion will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Mr. Smith was born in Bear Creek, NC to the late Ormsby and Thelma Smith.  He attended Goldston High School and spent most of his working career with CSX Railroad, as a machinist, where he retired. He spent some time as a parts delivery driver with Crook Motor Co. in Albemarle, where he met a lot of people in Charlotte and other areas.  For sure, he never met a stranger!  He was one of the early residents of Fairway Shores, Lake Tillery from 1967-2019.  He enjoyed the lake life – boating, sailing, skiing, and riding the wave runner.  He and Emily, his beloved wife of 58 years, loved to travel.  They have visited 46 of the 50 states and enjoyed many cruises to various islands.  The Fairway Shores 4th of July Parade was one of his favorite things. He loved to make sure the golf carts, gators, and whatever had wheels, ran in the parade without a hitch.  The hotdog fundraiser afterwards at his house was always a fun time for the whole Fairway Shores family.  The hotdog fundraiser helped the Shiners and the local fire departments.  Wayne was a member of Blackmer Lodge #127 and a former member of Mt. Vernon Lodge #143.  He received his 50 year member award from the Masonic Lodge and was a founding member of the Amran Shrine.  He was very active with all aspects of the lodge.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth Smith.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Emily Billings Smith of the home; daughter, Margaret Peacock and husband Michael of Locust; grandson, Joshua Peacock and wife Brittany of Oakboro; sister, Peggy Andrews and husband Edgar of Bear Creek; and sister in law, Nancy Tyson of Wilson; and numerous friends.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Wayne’s name to:  Hospice and Pallitive Care of Cabarrus Co. (Tucker House) 5003 Hospice Lane Kannapolis, NC 28081; Blackmer Lodge #127, 109 S. School St. Mt. Gilead, NC 27306; or Mt. Vernon Lodge #143, 185 Bonlee Rd. Bear Creek, NC 27207.

He will be missed by many.  The family would like to thank all the “lake family” and others for the friendship and support.  We as a family are so lucky to have each and every one of you.  When the occasion arises, please be sure to drink a “Pepsi” and share a memory of Wayne Douglas Smith.
