Margaret Lowdermilk Obituary

Margaret Mangum Lowdermilk 89 of Mt. Gilead died Tuesday Morning, February 26, 2019.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Gilead. Rev. Duane Partin and Rev. Jim Harris will officiate and interment will follow in Sharon Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Margaret was the youngest of 10 children born April 13, 1929 in Pageland, South Carolina to the late Grover and Lillie Gathings Mangum. She received an associate’s degree from Winthrop College in 1948.

She began her career with Winthrop College moving to Fairmont City Schools, Jupiter Elementary School, Baptist College of Charleston and retiring as Executive Secretary to the President of McMillan Corporation in Houston, Texas.

After retirement she and Bob returned to his hometown of Mt. Gilead where she became involved in all areas of community life. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher, United Methodist Women, Choir Member and Missions.

She will be fondly remembered as outgoing person, a great communicator who never met a stranger. She was a true southern belle who enjoyed singing, ball room dancing with her husband and travel. She and Bob had enjoyed 21 cruises and traveling to Europe and experiencing a trip to the Holy Land.

Of all her accomplishments she cherished her role as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother most.

In addition to her parents.  She was preceded in death by 9 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her husband Robert Steele “Bob” Lowdermilk Sr with whom she would have celebrated her 70 anniversary on June 19, 2019. One son Robert Steele “Bert” Lowdermilk Jr. of Hatteras Island, NC and one daughter Linda Elaine Lowdermilk of Mt. Gilead. Three grandchildren, Ian Michael Lowdermilk, Alaina Marie Lowdermilk and Nathan Steele Lowdermilk. One great-granddaughter Elyot Lowdermilk.
