Victor Gildreath Smith

Victor Gildreath Smith, 91 of Norwood passed away early Monday afternoon March 27, 2017 at CHS-Northeast.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00PM, Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Norwood.  Rev. David Lowe and Rev. Marilyn Wooten will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Stanly County DAV.  The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM, Wednesday evening, March 29, 2017 at Edwards Funeral Home in Norwood.

Mr. Smith was born August 24, 1925 in Stanly County to the late Jason Cephus and Nan Blalock Smith.  He worked for Young Manufacturing for 41 years and retired from Stanly Fixtures. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.  He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II; having served as a prison guard at the Nuremberg War Trials in Nuremberg, Germany.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Kimrey Smith; brothers, Cecil, Ernest, Haywood and Grover Smith; sisters, Tempie Harward, Maebelle Howell and Edna Preslar. 

He is survived by his children, Ann Austin (Craig) of Oakboro, Sylvia Russell (Ken) of Locust, Vicky Bray (Walt) of Pageland, SC and Steve Smith (Karen) of Norwood; brother, Baxter Smith of Norwood; 11 grandchildren, one step grandchild, 16 great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.
