Mary Sue (Shankle) Hopkins

Mary Sue Shankle Hopkins of Norwood went home to be with the Lord on March 26, 2018.

Mary Sue was born August 11, 1948 to the late Franklin L. Shankle and Lectie Brown Shankle of Norwood.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years John P. Hopkins, Sister Georgia S. Clay and Husband Jim Clay of Pfafftown, NC, Niece Amanda Clay of Greensboro, NC, her beloved Mother-in-Law Evelyn "Sis" Hopkins and Aunt Betty Lou Honeycutt both of Norwood, and special friends Pat Harrison of Mt. Gilead, NC, Jerry Thompson of Star, NC, and Dr. Robert Morgan of Rutherfordton, NC.

Mary Sue studied music at Wingate University and pipe organ with E. Carter Breeze of Conway, SC.  In her earlier years she taught piano in Norwood and played piano and organ at First United Methodist Church in Norwood where she was a lifelong member. Upon moving to the Murrells Inlet, SC area with her husband John in 1974, she continued her music ministry at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Garden City Beach where she was full time organist until she and John moved back to Norwood in 1984. They then built Yadkin Valley Steakhouse in Albemarle and ran it until 2005 when they sold it and retired.

Funeral services for Mary Sue will be held at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Norwood at 3:00 PM on Friday, March 30, 2018. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Jimmy Hudson, Pastor of Aquadale Baptist Church where, prior to her illness, Mary Sue attended church with her husband, will officiate. Interment at Norview Gardens will immediately follow the service.
