Lula (Thompson) Smith

Lula Thompson Smith, 94 of Southport, affectionately known as "Blue" to her family and friends, went to be with her Lord on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Mrs. Smith was born February 17, 1923 in Mt. Gilead, NC, the daughter of the late Eugene and Mattie Smith. Blue was a very active woman in her lifetime and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Norwood, NC. She served her church as a Sunday School teacher from the time she was 16 years old. She was a Girls Auxiliary leader and president of her Women's Missionary Union. She had served as a Girl Scout leader when her girls were young. She raised two daughters. Later in life, she and her husband, Malon, traveled and visited every state, Canada, and Mexico, mostly in their motorhome.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter Nancy Tubbs and husband Darwin of Southport; 3 grandsons, Kent Snelson and wife Regina, Nolan Smith and wife Kim, and Randall Snelson and wife Cathy; a step-grandson Blake Miller and wife Brenda; a step-granddaughter Marcia Miller; four great-granddaughters, Madison Snelson Newsome, Ellen Snelson, Emily Snelson, and Emma Snelson; a sister Annette Vanhoy and husband Richard; a brother Vernon Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her loving husband Malon R. Smith; and her daughter Judi Snelson.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Shoreline Baptist Church, 4198 Vanessa Drive, Southport, NC 28461, with Reverend Neil Grimes officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 pm prior to the service at the church.
