Betty Jean was born May 11, 1950 in Anson County. She was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary Virginia Bowman Dean. A member of Lilesville United Methodist Church, she was a retired Teacher Assistant at Norwood Elementary, where she impacted many students.  Mrs. Bowers was known for her “Dean stare,” humor, and ability to “set someone straight” if they were misbehaving. She also worked many years at Smith’s Convenience Store in Aquadale, where she interacted with many.  Betty was known as a corn-shuck doll maker, the best pound-cake baker in the world, and an avid lover of going barefooted outside.  As a mother, Momma ensured her children’s laundry was always caught up, their houses were clean, and they had more than what they needed.  As a grandmother, Nana loved her grandchildren fiercely and Thursday was always grandkids’ day on Cottonville Road; if you ever rode by on a Thursday evening, she was always outside with Logan, Hunter, Blake, or Reed--and about 10 million toys--making cherished memories.  Betty was a generous soul, always sending notes of encouragement or gratitude, performing acts of service for those she loved, and never sitting still.

She is survived by her husband Don Bowers of the home; two sons, Chadrick Lynn Bowers of Norwood and James Ryan Bowers (Allison) of Albemarle; one Daughter Meredith Bowers Howell (Eric) of Albemarle; two Brothers, Charles Dean of Charleston, SC and Ken Dean of Lilesville; one sister, Carolyn Ingram of Lilesville; four Grandchildren, Logan and Hunter Bowers and Blake and Reed Howell.

She was preceded in death by an Infant Son in 1970 and two brothers, Gilbert and James Dean.

Condolences can be made online.  In lieu of flowers, The Betty Jean Dean Bowers Scholarship has been established for those wishing to contribute.  Checks can be mailed or delivered, payable to South Stanly High School, The Betty Jean Dean Bowers Scholarship, 40488 South Stanly School Road, Norwood, NC, 28128.
